On the Signature of Short Distance Scale in the Cosmic Microwave Background
نویسندگان
چکیده
We discuss the signature of the scale of short distance physics in the Cosmic Microwave Background. In addition to effects which depend on the ratio of Hubble scale H during inflation to the energy scale M of the short distance physics, there can be effects which depend on φ̇/M where φ is the classical background of the inflaton field. Therefore, the imprints of short distance physics on the spectrum of Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies generically involve a double expansion. We present some examples of a single scalar field with higher order kinetic terms coupled to Einstein gravity, and illustrate that the effects of short distance physics on the Cosmic Microwave Background can be substantial even for H << M , and generically involve corrections that are not simply powers of H/M . The size of such effects can depend on the short distance scale non-analytically even though the action is local. 11.25.-w Typeset using REVTEX 1

Signatures of Short Distance Physics in the Cosmic Microwave Background
We systematically investigate the effect of short distance physics on the spectrum of temperature anistropies in the Cosmic Microwave Background produced during inflation. We present a general argument–assuming only low energy locality–that the size of such effects are of order H/M, where H is the Hubble parameter during inflation, and M is the scale of the high energy physics. We evaluate the ...
متن کاملCosmic 21-cm Fluctuations as a Probe of Fundamental Physics
Fluctuations in high-redshift cosmic 21-cm radiation provide a new window for observing unconventional effects of high-energy physics in the primordial spectrum of density perturbations. In scenarios for which the initial state prior to inflation is modified at short distances, or for which deviations from scale invariance arise during the course of inflation, the cosmic 21-cm power spectrum ca...
متن کاملTopological Defect Models of Structure Formation after the Cobe Discovery of Cmb Anisotropies
The COBE satellite has discovered anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) consistent with a scale invariant spectrum of density perturbations1). As reviewed in this lecture, topological defect models of structure formation generically produce such a spectrum. We give a summary of the cosmic string and global texture models, focusing on distinct observational signatures in large-sc...
متن کاملCosmological perturbations and short distance physics from noncommutative geometry
We investigate the possible effects on the evolution of perturbations in the inflationary epoch due to short distance physics. We introduce a suitable non local action for the inflaton field, suggested by Noncommutative Geometry, and obtained by adopting a generalized star product on a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background. In particular, we study how the presence of a length scale where spacet...
متن کاملThe cosmic microwave background: a theorist’s perspective
We review the role of the temperature anisotropies and polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation in constraining the cosmological model. We put particular emphasis on the major milestones that have been passed, and CMB constraints on early-universe physics. We also look ahead, surveying what we hope to learn from the next generation of instruments targeting the small-scale...
